Turtles (and their land-loving cousins, tortoises) are seriously cool ancient reptiles that have been around for over 110 million years—yep, they outlived the dinosaurs!
Here are a few fun facts:
Sea turtles have an incredible built-in GPS: they use Earth’s magnetic fields to navigate thousands of miles back to the exact beach where they hatched to lay their own eggs.
Green sea turtles are mostly vegetarians, munching on seagrasses and algae—which is why their fat is greenish!
Many turtles can live super long lives; the oldest known tortoise, Jonathan, is over 190 years old.
Baby sea turtles’ sex is determined by nest temperature: warmer sand produces more females, cooler produces males.
